Roadie/Young Adult

by Edward Dunn

Compare and Contrast: Two Similar Movies

Recently, I watched both, ROADIE and YOUNG ADULT. To answer your question; no, this is not a remake of Roadie (1980), staring Meatloaf.

One movie is alright and the other is much worse. These two films look nothing alike.  But look closer, these two characters look at their past, and figure out where they went wrong.

Burnout the day
Burnout the night

The glory years are long behind him. Jimmy is no longer a roadie for Blue Oyster Cult. Now, he must start his life anew. Move over Kevin James, there is a new KING OF QUEENS.

It seems I mistook Charlize Theron for Uma Thurman. It happens, like with Diablo Cody and Bill Shakespeare.

Mavis Gary had a messy divorce. Now she wants to rekindle the flame of her old high school  romance.

Similarities

  • Both are overgrown child.
  • Returns to home town.
  • Reflecting on high school days.
  • Revisiting high school romances.
  • Protagonist has a sense of hopelessness/lives in a fantasy world.
  • Each character possesses a ‘SWEET VALLEY HIGH’ mentality.

Differences

  • Takes place in Queens, NY.
  • Never popular in high school; nickname was '’Jimmy Testicles’.
  • He is kind of a complete fraud.
  • Takes place in Minneapolis and Small-Town, Minnesota.
  • Popular and pretty in high school.
  • Ghost-wrote many popular young-adult novels.

Two Separate Conclusions

ROADIE

Like a Blue Oyster Cult concert; it’s fun for about 20 minutes, that’s it. A roadie made this movie,  this I am a hundred-percent certain of. Don’t believe me? Listen closely to that song that’s played right before the credits, and then remember the bad movie you watched before the song was played. Better yet, just don’t  watch this movie. The only reason you read a movie review is to avoid the potentially devastating consequences of watching an awful movie...you’re welcome.

Final Verdict (ROADIE): 12 out of 100

YOUNG ADULT

The characters are realistic, especially the writer. The two cases of Diet Coke sitting in her pantry, eavesdropping on private conversations of her target demographic. Makes fun of the silly ideas teenage girls have about love, romance, and human decency. I am impressed with the strong conclusion of what is otherwise a merely, average movie.

Final Verdict (YOUNG ADULT): 74 out of 100

I should give an overall verdict of both movies, watched one after another, a marathon of sorts.

Absolute Final Verdict: 86 out of 200

I'm not good with fractions, but I'm sure you can reduce it down.
